I just found out that there was a nice little write-up about my MOBank Artboards by Alice Thorson in the Kansas City Star back in September. Here’s an excerpt from the article…

“Anderson, a member of the art faculty at UMKC, is on a roll this season, with works on view in the “Thee & Me” exhibits at both the Epsten and Greenlease Galleries. He will also have two videos in the Kemper Museum‘s “The Big Reveal” show, opening Sept. 23.

On the west-facing “Artboards” at the Missouri Bank Crossroads branch, 125 Southwest Blvd., Anderson will show two images from his new video “Junk Yard.” Featuring fragments of people, animals and objects drawn from mid-20th century advertising, the works tap consumer nostalgia for an earlier more prosperous America.”

Images from my recent video Junk Yard are being featured on the Missouri Bank Artboards in Kansas City’s Crossroads Arts District through the end of the year. This ongoing project, which rotates work by KC artists, is organized by Art Through Architecture. The full press release is available here.

AiA-KC Honors Art Through Architecture

Kansas City’s Art Through Architecture (AtA) program was honored last night at the annual American Institute of Architects KC Chapter holiday party. Plaques were given to all of the clients who have commissioned or bought artwork for new architectural projects since the inception of AtA. Included in that group was Frank Uryasz, who received a Gold Level Achievement award for commissioning my three-channel video piece There And Back Again for the offices of the National Center for Drug Free Sport.

The opening reception for my exhibition at Swarm Gallery in Oakland happened last Saturday evening with a very nice sized crowd attending. My audio and video installation Ectoplasmic Response was shown along with drawings by Bay Area artist Casey Jex Smith and an installation of ghostly architectural elements made of vellum by Brooklyn-based artist Sonya Blesofsky. There was also a short performance by 4AD artist tUnE-YarDs.

For anyone visiting the Bay Area, you should check out the up-and-coming art scene in Oakland. There are some very interesting things happening there, with Swarm Gallery being in the center of it.

There and Back Again reception

We had the reception for the Art Through Architecture commission, There and Back Again, yesterday evening at the offices of the National Center for Drug Free Sport in Kansas City.

A good crowd of architects, artists, critics, and patrons showed up to view the piece and to hear a brief talk about the project by myself, Kate Hackman (Charlotte Street Fund), Josh Shelton (el dorado architects), and Frank Uryasz (Drug Free Sport).

A great spread of local cheese was provided by Tony Glamcevski and his Green Dirt Farm.

My commission for Drug Free Sport was featured in a short article in the Kansas City Star which ran on Saturday, August 1. The article, titled All Eyes on Downtown Art, was written by Alice Thorson, the paper’s head art critic.

DFS commission installed

The Drug Free Sport commission piece is finally installed. There are a couple more color tweeks to be done on it but it’s currently on view nonetheless.

There will be an open house and possible artist discussion about it held for local architects, critics, and DFS employees sometime within the next couple of months.

This is the final Photoshop mockup for the three-channel video commissioned by the National Center for Drug Free Sport. The video animation is still in the works but will hopefully be done within the next couple of weeks.
