Totem (1) in collectors’ home

I just received some photos from the collectors who purchased the first edition of my recent Totem (1) video piece showing the work installed in their home. This is the first multi-channel video work of mine purchased for and installed in a domestic environment. The collector who purchased the second edition also plans on installing it in his home and I have a meeting with him next week to discuss installation options.

The third and final copy of the piece will be installed tomorrow at the Bruno David Gallery in St. Louis for an exhibition that opens next week.

One of my recent pieces, the three-channel Totem (1), is currently installed in the back gallery room of Byron Cohen Gallery in Kansas City where it will most likely be on view for the rest of the year. If you missed seeing it during my SpaceRockSpasm exhibit at Review Studios, drop by the gallery sometime.

SpaceRockSpasm finally came down yesterday at Review Studios. It only took my assistant Adam and I an hour and a half to take down all of the equipment. However, we still have a dozen holes that need to patched before the gallery is repainted.

All in all, it was a very successful show with a great review in the KC Star and a surprising number of sales.

My newest exhibition, SpaceRockSpasm, opened at Review Studios in Kansas City last night. There was a nice crowd and an amazing reception to all of the new work. The exhibition is comprised of eight pieces, five being multi-channel video works and two being multi-channel audio works. The pieces themselves showcase a variety of recent influences on my work such as Krautrock, comics, early experimental film, and recent geo-politics. One, a three-channel vertical LCD piece titled Totem (1) (seen in the image here), seemed to be the most praised and looks to have already sold of a couple of copies of the small edition. Images of all of the works will be posted on this site very soon. The images from the reception are courtesy of friend and colleague Elijah Gowin.

Installation for the new exhibition SpaceRockSpasm is going well. My assistant Adam and I got a good bit set up yesterday. The monitors are all mounted so all that remains on the video portion of the installation is running the remaining cabling. I then have to mount a few dozen speaker components and run the wiring. Hopefully I’ll be done with installation in a couple of days.

The exhibition opens at Review Studios in Kansas City this Friday, March 12. The reception will be from 6 to 9 PM so drop by if you’re in town.

review for Ectoplasmic Response

A very nice review of the show at Swarm Gallery was just posted on the Review website, a KC-based arts blog. The writer, Jess Brier, had some interesting things to say about Ectoplasmic Response. It’s always great when a writer or critic “gets” a piece and is able to verbalize thoughts behind it much better than me.

The exhibition remains on view at the gallery in Oakland until March 14.

opening reception at Swarm Gallery

The opening reception for my exhibition at Swarm Gallery in Oakland happened last Saturday evening with a very nice sized crowd attending. My audio and video installation Ectoplasmic Response was shown along with drawings by Bay Area artist Casey Jex Smith and an installation of ghostly architectural elements made of vellum by Brooklyn-based artist Sonya Blesofsky. There was also a short performance by 4AD artist tUnE-YarDs.

For anyone visiting the Bay Area, you should check out the up-and-coming art scene in Oakland. There are some very interesting things happening there, with Swarm Gallery being in the center of it.

Installation is almost complete on Ectoplasmic Response at the Swarm Gallery in Oakland. I’ve been working since yesterday afternoon mounting and wiring the projector and all of the speakers. All that remains is to run all of the final power cables and close off the ceiling of the project room.

The public reception is Saturday evening from 6-8pm. Also showing in the gallery are Sonya Blesofsky, an installation artist from Brooklyn, and Casey Jex Smith, a painter from the Bay Area.

new audio work debuts

My newest piece, an audio wall scuplture titled Somnambulance (1), debuted this past Friday at the Review Studios annual residents’ exhibition in the studio gallery. It changed quite a bit from the first version that was being installed (posted here earlier in the week). The piece consists of 6 speakers mounted on the walls in a corner of the gallery with the speaker wires creating a sort of drawing as they are pulled over the top edge of the walls. A subwoofer is hidden behind the walls. The audio is a Dolby 5.1 track which allows the sounds to move throughout the speaker configuration. The audio is composed of 30 layers of sound appropriated from obscure mid-century soundtracks and spoken word.

I began installing my new speaker piece, Somnambulance (1), at Review Studios yesterday. The piece will be part of the annual studio residents group exhibition, which opens this coming Friday 6-9pm.
