A short (and somewhat literal and simple-minded) review of the group exhibition currently up at The Studios Inc. was published in The Pitch today. The writer warns of Deep Down Trauma Hounds being uninteresting to people concerned with the financial crisis. Bizarre.

new multi-channel video

Deep Down Trauma Hounds, a new five-channel video piece of mine, is currently on display in the annual group exhibition at The Studios Inc. exhibition space. The piece contains appropriated video clips from 1970s European horror films which create an unsettling, ritualistic experience. The piece will be on view through February 2012.

A new video interview was shot by a Kansas City production crew in my studio earlier this week. The final video will be available here and on the Byron Cohen Gallery website sometime in the next couple of weeks.

SpaceRockSpasm closed

SpaceRockSpasm finally came down yesterday at Review Studios. It only took my assistant Adam and I an hour and a half to take down all of the equipment. However, we still have a dozen holes that need to patched before the gallery is repainted.

All in all, it was a very successful show with a great review in the KC Star and a surprising number of sales.

My newest exhibition, SpaceRockSpasm, opened at Review Studios in Kansas City last night. There was a nice crowd and an amazing reception to all of the new work. The exhibition is comprised of eight pieces, five being multi-channel video works and two being multi-channel audio works. The pieces themselves showcase a variety of recent influences on my work such as Krautrock, comics, early experimental film, and recent geo-politics. One, a three-channel vertical LCD piece titled Totem (1) (seen in the image here), seemed to be the most praised and looks to have already sold of a couple of copies of the small edition. Images of all of the works will be posted on this site very soon. The images from the reception are courtesy of friend and colleague Elijah Gowin.

Installation for the new exhibition SpaceRockSpasm is going well. My assistant Adam and I got a good bit set up yesterday. The monitors are all mounted so all that remains on the video portion of the installation is running the remaining cabling. I then have to mount a few dozen speaker components and run the wiring. Hopefully I’ll be done with installation in a couple of days.

The exhibition opens at Review Studios in Kansas City this Friday, March 12. The reception will be from 6 to 9 PM so drop by if you’re in town.

new work for upcoming exhibit

I’ve been busy trying to complete a new set of pieces for my upcoming show at Review Studios. There will be a number of new single-channel videos, multi-channel videos, audio sculptures, and maybe even a couple of new photographs. The final set of work is still in flux a bit.

The exhibition, titled SpaceRockSpasm, opens 6-9pm on March 12.

Picnic on Art Island

Picnic on Art Island, the monthly event organized by Cara and Cabezas Contemporary, was held at my studio last night. We had a nice crowd, a lively discussion led by Cara Megan Lewis, and a great meal by Kristen Montgomery.
