Installation for the new exhibition SpaceRockSpasm is going well. My assistant Adam and I got a good bit set up yesterday. The monitors are all mounted so all that remains on the video portion of the installation is running the remaining cabling. I then have to mount a few dozen speaker components and run the wiring. Hopefully I’ll be done with installation in a couple of days.

The exhibition opens at Review Studios in Kansas City this Friday, March 12. The reception will be from 6 to 9 PM so drop by if you’re in town.

review for Ectoplasmic Response

A very nice review of the show at Swarm Gallery was just posted on the Review website, a KC-based arts blog. The writer, Jess Brier, had some interesting things to say about Ectoplasmic Response. It’s always great when a writer or critic “gets” a piece and is able to verbalize thoughts behind it much better than me.

The exhibition remains on view at the gallery in Oakland until March 14.

new work for upcoming exhibit

I’ve been busy trying to complete a new set of pieces for my upcoming show at Review Studios. There will be a number of new single-channel videos, multi-channel videos, audio sculptures, and maybe even a couple of new photographs. The final set of work is still in flux a bit.

The exhibition, titled SpaceRockSpasm, opens 6-9pm on March 12.

My video Lawn Ornaments was recently purchased by Kemper Museum director Rachel Blackburn Cozad and her husband Kanon Cozad. This is the first video piece they have purchased and, needless to say, I’m honored to be a part of their impressive personal collection.

Yesterday I helped them set it up on their new LED/Apple TV display system. This is the first time I’ve worked with the new LED displays and I have to say the quality is amazing.

video bienniale in Dubai

I just received confirmation that an older video of mine, Pigeon (2001), will be shown in Video’Appart Dubai, a biennial of video art taking place in Dubai March 10-28. My work will be projected outside of the Dubai Art Gallery during the event.

This video is still by far my most requested. In the past decade it has been shown in England, Canada, Cuba, Brazil, and Thailand, not to mention locations around the US. I had intended to “retire” it after its exhibition at the Everson Museum of Art last summer, but this sounds like a very interesting opportunity.

Genome of the Soul

I finally got a recording of the performance of Genome of the Soul, a collaboration with composer Andrew Waggoner. This piece was performed by Andrew Waggoner, Nurit Pacht, Tawnya Popoff, and Caroline Stinson on September 29, 2009 at Syracuse University’s Watson Theater as a prelude to my lecture given in conjunction with the Intermissions project. The piece was also documented in photos and video but we’ve had a hard time tracking down the footage.

opening reception at Swarm Gallery

The opening reception for my exhibition at Swarm Gallery in Oakland happened last Saturday evening with a very nice sized crowd attending. My audio and video installation Ectoplasmic Response was shown along with drawings by Bay Area artist Casey Jex Smith and an installation of ghostly architectural elements made of vellum by Brooklyn-based artist Sonya Blesofsky. There was also a short performance by 4AD artist tUnE-YarDs.

For anyone visiting the Bay Area, you should check out the up-and-coming art scene in Oakland. There are some very interesting things happening there, with Swarm Gallery being in the center of it.

Installation is almost complete on Ectoplasmic Response at the Swarm Gallery in Oakland. I’ve been working since yesterday afternoon mounting and wiring the projector and all of the speakers. All that remains is to run all of the final power cables and close off the ceiling of the project room.

The public reception is Saturday evening from 6-8pm. Also showing in the gallery are Sonya Blesofsky, an installation artist from Brooklyn, and Casey Jex Smith, a painter from the Bay Area.

corporate acquisition : AT&T

Vertical Blinds (2) was just purchased for the AT&T corporate office in Dallas. The acquisition was made by a private art consultant and sold through my Dallas gallery, Marty Walker Gallery.

The University of Missouri-Kansas City (where I teach video and animation) is currently featuring my Intermissions project in Syracuse (which ended in December) on the main portal page of their website. An article about the project and my teaching can also be found through the UMKC Office of PR.

Better late than never I guess.
