photo windows at SU

blog_schine_mockup.jpg
Syracuse University asked us to project one of my videos onto large windows in their student center. However, after looking at all of the technical possibilities and problems with the space, we decided to propose covering the windows with vinyl photo material instead. Everyone involved loved the mockup so, depending on price, we may cover more than one of the windows.

blog_UVPtest1.jpg
One of the components of the Syracuse project is to project a number of my recent video animations onto buildings in downtown Syracuse under the Urban Video Project. Last night we tested out some of the projections (Op Eyes is seen here) and took photos for the catalog. Once the videos are ready they will be set to run dusk-to-dawn from mid-August to mid-October.

We're almost finished installing the speakers for the new installation at Light Work. I'm working on wiring all of the amps today and should have it all done by tomorrow.

Installation of Fragments, Spirits, Dust Bunnies, my new piece for Light Work, has begun in Syracuse. Right now I'm placing black circles on the walls to determine the placement of 6" speakers to be mounted. We're hoping to have all of the speakers mounted and wired by Monday.

This is the final Photoshop mockup for the three-channel video commissioned by the National Center for Drug Free Sport. The video animation is still in the works but will hopefully be done within the next couple of weeks.

abs_photos_tests1.jpg
I'm working on a series of photos, possibly to be shown at Light Work in the fall. These test shots use images from a video that I originally shot while on residency at Light Work in fall 2006. New photos are going to be taken at my studio in Kansas City in the coming weeks.

new project in Oakland

swarm_logo.gifI just got confirmation that I am being commissioned to create a new version of the Always Becoming Something project for Swarm Gallery in Oakland, CA. I will be videotaping gallery patrons there sometime later this year and will show the completed video at the gallery in early 2010.

I've got another mockup of the monitor layout for the new commissioned piece for Drug Free Sport. We've decided to pursue the idea of a vertical layout which means I have to retinker the animation composition to account for vertical rather than horizontal movement.

psych-portrait-Claire-2.jpgI'm still working on animation sketches for a new series of portraits. This is a new test using my intern, Claire, as the subject. I'll be posting actual animation clips soon.

I'm finally getting some animation tests done for the commission for Drug Free Sport. We're going to be creating a three-channel monitor piece for their new main reception area. The video sketch above is a composite of all three 16:9 images.

psychadelic-SP-test-4.jpg
I'm working on some tests for a new portrait (or series of portraits) for the upcoming exhibit at Light Work. This is a frame from a self-portrait animation but I'm looking into other models for the work. It will most likely be produced to be a video and still prints.

And yes...the colors in the final will most likely be hyper/psychedelic.

testing : audio wall drawings

I'm finally getting around to testing out some multi-channel audio pieces designed to work as wall drawings. I use 6" raw speaker components and 16-gauge black speaker wire mounted straight onto the wall. I did a few of these in 2005-06 and have been dying to work on some more.

commission for Drug Free Sport lobby

AtA-NCDFS-sketch-1circle.jpgI found out yesterday that I was awarded the commission to create art for the lobby of the National Center for Drug Free Sport. I'll be working with Josh Shelton of el dorado architects to create a new video piece. I proposed a multi-channel video "frieze" above the reception desk, using circular masks on the video monitors, but I have a feeling the design will change quite a bit before it's over. It's going to be a fairly quick project and will probably be completed in 4-8 weeks.

This is a direction I've wanted to take my work for some time, so I'm very excited to get started.

A couple of days ago I toured the site for the new Art Through Architecture commission for which I've been shortlisted. It's an addition on the National Center for Drug Free Sport building which el dorado is rennovating. Based on what I saw in the finsihed section of the building, this new addition is going to be absolutely beautiful.

Here's hoping they decide on adding some video to the space.

Now that the holidays are over and the Dallas show is behind me, I'm going full force on the commission for the Salina Art Center. titled Always Becoming Something (3). I'm almost done keying out all of the footage and am now testing out the overall evinromental look of the piece (like in the test shot here).

My newest video animation, Lawn Ornaments, is nearing completion. It will debut in a group exhibition, Vacant Spaces, at Marty Walker Gallery opening January 10.

The final video (which is 2 min 30 sec) is going to take five computers the better part of a week to render.

video sketch (pigeons in Salina)

While waiting on volunteers in Salina on my last trip (see earlier entry), I took about 15 minutes of footage of the hundreds of pigeons seen from the loft windows. As I've been going through all of the project footage (over 120 GB), I decided to do some quick tests of the pigeons as a way of taking a break. I might come back to this later.

I just finished another weekend of videotaping residents of Salina, KS, for my project for the Salina Art Center. I think we've now got enough footage to begin working on the final piece.

The opening has been moved back to mid-March 2009 which is a great relief.

location scouting in Syracuse

Syracuse_Oct08.jpg
Light Work director Hannah Frieser and I spent about five hours today scouting locations for my exhibition coming up at Light Work in 2009. We visited Syracuse University's Art Galleries, Warehouse Gallery, Point of Contact, Delavan Art Gallery, and Spark, as well as numerous buildings around SU's campus which have public LCD screens. Our thought is to install video "interventions" at various spots around the city and campus. These interventions could take the form of projections on the sides of buildings or small LCD monitors installed in conspicuous places.

Kali animation test (Bush-McCain)

I have been working on some animation tests for a possible video based on Kali, the Hindu deity of destruction. Today I decided to change out the images to commemorate the chaos of our current political situation.

salina_shoot1.jpg
Video shooting began last weekend in Salina, KS, for a new project for the Salina Art Center. The piece will be similar to Always Becoming Something (1) which was created in 2006 during a residency at Light Work.

Last weekend my assistant Cory and I videotaped 15 Salina citizens. I'm returning sometime later in the fall to videotape more volunteers.

The final piece is set to be shown at the Salina Art Center January 15, 2009.

I've been working on some psychadelia-inspired animation using vintage stag reels as source material. This is the first short test in this direction.

projection test for Nerman Museum commission

nerman_proj_test.jpgI'm working on a commission for the new Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art in Overland Park, KS. I've been asked to create a unique single-channel video animation that will become part of the museum's permanent collection. It will also be featured on the new two-story projection system on the Reigner Center, the building just to the west of the Nerman Museum on the JCCC campus. In preparation for the commission, we did some projection tests using Soft Velvet Float as a test image. The final commission piece should be done sometime in spring 2008.
