There and Back Again reception

blog_DFS-reception.jpgWe had the reception for the Art Through Architecture commission, There and Back Again, yesterday evening at the offices of the National Center for Drug Free Sport in Kansas City.

A good crowd of architects, artists, critics, and patrons showed up to view the piece and to hear a brief talk about the project by myself, Kate Hackman (Charlotte Street Fund), Josh Shelton (el dorado architects), and Frank Uryasz (Drug Free Sport).

A great spread of local cheese was provided by Tony Glamcevski and his Green Dirt Farm.

blog_DFSfinal1.jpg
The Drug Free Sport commission piece is finally installed. There are a couple more color tweeks to be done on it but it's currently on view nonetheless.

There will be an open house and possible artist discussion about it held for local architects, critics, and DFS employees sometime within the next couple of months.

Pigeon, a single-channel video of mine, has been picked by curator Debora Ryan to be shown at the Everson Museum of Art in Syracuse this summer. The solo exhibition, running July 25 to August 30, will be the kick-off to my larger series of exhibitions at Syracuse University and around the city of Syracuse. This project, titled Intermissions, will begin August 14 in the main gallery at Light Work and will continue with other exhibitions and events through October.

I gave a quick gallery talk last night (along with nine other artists) in conjunction with the group show, Happy Tree Friends, at la Esquina in KC. It was very well attended considering that it was a First Friday gallery night and pretty much every gallery and art center in town had openings.

I found out that the exhibit had been reviewed a few weeks ago in The Pitch (KC's weekly alt paper) and I had missed the issue on the stands. The critic, Dana Self, wrote a very intelligent piece and had a couple of nice things to say about my video Epic Escapism (2).

Epic Escapism (2), part of an older video installation of mine, is included in Happy Tree Friends (or Standing: Tree as Agent, Index, Object of Desire), a group exhibition curated by Kate Hackman. The exhibition opened to a packed crowd last night at the Urban Culture Project's la Esquina space in KC's Westside neighborhood. The exhibition runs until April 18, 2009.

The original installation can be viewed in my portfolio.

My new video, Always Becoming Something (3), opened this week at the Salina Art Center. It was commissioned by the SAC and is comprised of video portraits of 27 residents of Salina, KS. The exhibition runs until May 7, 2009.

The video is the third in an on-going series of videos depicting people in various art communities. The first two were created with art students at Syracuse University while I was in residency at Light Work.

commission for Drug Free Sport lobby

AtA-NCDFS-sketch-1circle.jpgI found out yesterday that I was awarded the commission to create art for the lobby of the National Center for Drug Free Sport. I'll be working with Josh Shelton of el dorado architects to create a new video piece. I proposed a multi-channel video "frieze" above the reception desk, using circular masks on the video monitors, but I have a feeling the design will change quite a bit before it's over. It's going to be a fairly quick project and will probably be completed in 4-8 weeks.

This is a direction I've wanted to take my work for some time, so I'm very excited to get started.

Op Eyes projected

Finally.

Op Eyes has been placed in the location for which it was created, the projection system on the Regnier Center adjacent to the Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art. It was tested last night for the opening reception for the museum's new acquisitions exhibit.

This isn't going to be a permanent public installation, but since the piece is in the museum's permanent collection, hopefully they'll put it up on the screen regularly.

Now that the holidays are over and the Dallas show is behind me, I'm going full force on the commission for the Salina Art Center. titled Always Becoming Something (3). I'm almost done keying out all of the footage and am now testing out the overall evinromental look of the piece (like in the test shot here).

My newest video animation, Lawn Ornaments, is nearing completion. It will debut in a group exhibition, Vacant Spaces, at Marty Walker Gallery opening January 10.

The final video (which is 2 min 30 sec) is going to take five computers the better part of a week to render.

I finally got some installation images for Op Eyes showing in the Oppenheimer New Media Gallery at the Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art. The projection is approx. 18 ft. x 10 ft. and is being shown from Blu-ray disc.

video sketch (pigeons in Salina)

While waiting on volunteers in Salina on my last trip (see earlier entry), I took about 15 minutes of footage of the hundreds of pigeons seen from the loft windows. As I've been going through all of the project footage (over 120 GB), I decided to do some quick tests of the pigeons as a way of taking a break. I might come back to this later.

opening reception at the Nerman Museum

The opening reception at the Nerman Museum last Friday night was great. Both shows opening that night (mine and the CSF 2008 awards) were very well attended. The reactions to Op Eyes were very enthusiastic. It's a shame that the piece couldn't be shown on the Reigner Center projection system as well as in the Oppenheimer New Media Gallery (where it opened), but hopefully everything will be up and running again soon.

The video was shot by Daniel Smith, one of my motion design students.

I just finished another weekend of videotaping residents of Salina, KS, for my project for the Salina Art Center. I think we've now got enough footage to begin working on the final piece.

The opening has been moved back to mid-March 2009 which is a great relief.
